Hello Jenine, To access the Emoji keyboard in OS X Maverick, when in an edit field, simply use the Control + Command + Spacebar key combo.
This will bring up the Emoji soft keyboard which looks and behaves just as it does in iOS. I only wish it were this simple in Windows 7 (smile).
