If you check the archives you'll find lots of lively discussion about this. Short answer is that iTunes does not rip DVDs and commercial ones are encrypted to keep most people from even trying. In the US the mere act of breaking encryption is illegal due to the DMCA laws and they trump fair use laws. That said, there are tools which will copy DVDs to your hard drive just fine such as RipIt. Once you have those files they are quite large and you might want to re-compress them to something smaller with handbrake.
