Yes, I have encountered this issue.  The problem is most likely being caused by 
your phone.

First, disconnect the phone from your Mac.

Second, reboot both your Mac and your phone.

Finally, reconnect the phone to your Mac.  All things being equal, you should 
be good to go.

I have connected my iphone to my computer using the cable. All I can get is a 
message in itunes 12 is waiting for synch to start. Has anyone encountered this
