Try going into properties(command + , Go to the the side panel button in the toolbar. Check if external disks is marked.

I remember when I bought mine, I tried plugging the thunderbolt cable in my USB port! I hope there is nothing wrong with yours. I have plugged mine in my Mac mini and my I Mac.
