The problem is that I'm stuck on the log-in screen without speech. I
think I actually enabled the vault during the update to Yosemite.
So, even Apple leaves us speechless sometimes *smile*.
Right now, no MAC for me today then.

If you have File vault enabled, and you are using an older mac, then
all you will hear is the single beep for user name, double beep for
password.
You can however turn VO on the log on screen. If you go into system
preferences, go to users and groups, interact with the user table and
VO until you hear Log in Options.
Stop interacting, and check the box that says use voiceover on the log
on window.
Please note that you will have to check the "Click the lock to makes
changes" checkbox and enter your password.
