I forgot to mention that I was trying this on the latest osx 10.10.2 so maybe it behaves better on other versions.

Downloaded and installed this new version. While I could type text into a 
document there were lots of things that caused voiceover to crash and restart 
repeatedly. For example, navigating the toolbar seemed to throw VO over a 
cliff. I also tried to insert a table (command-F12) which pops a modal dialog 
for the title, number of columns and rows etc. Voiceover crashed over and over 
and only stopped when I managed to get an escape key in to cancel the modal. 
Too bad as navigation of the wordprocessing text entry stuff was actually 
working fairly well.
