Hello Ray, This usually occurs because your connection to the Internet is either lost, unstable, or extremely slow, causing the server connection to time-out.
The next time this happens, before closing Mail, Open Safari and see if it is online. It may also be time for you to reboot your Internet MODEM and/or router.
