Weird. It works on my MacBook. I did afplay ~/Desktop/Peace.mp3
and it started playing. Tried the same thing on my ancient MacPro desktop and it also worked. Both boxes are on OSX 10.10.2. Are you sure the audio file was correct? Did it give any messages? Normally there should be no text output and the audio just starts playing as soon as you hit enter.
