The AppleTV box has five connectors across the back. Power, HDMI with a micro-USB just below it, Optical Audio and Ethernet. The optical out is the little square kind you find on most digital receivers.

Hi Tim,

what is the setup you have going out of the optical? I was under the impression
the Apple TV only had a power cord and cdmi out, so not sure what you guys are
talking about optically? The sound bar I am looking at is the Wilton Sound Bar
with Bluetooth sold on Amazon as it has a ton of input and outputs, and I think
the only thing I would be using would be the volume so once I figure that out
would not need sighted assistance to work it, the amazon ad mentions it works
with gaming stuff but does not mention the Apple TV, here is the link if anyone
wants to take a look at it. Thanks for all the feedback

This is the setup I have, and it’s beautiful. Also, if I want to listen to
iTunes Radio which will soon become apple Music, I don’t have to turn the tv
on, I can run it just through the Bar and it’s nice. Hope you can get it to
work for you.

OK, so it looks like if you want a soundbar, your best bet would be to go
optical out of the Apple TV, to Opbical in on the soundbar.

Subject: Apple TV Connection Question

I am finally thinking about getting an Apple TV, but am curious as I know you
have to connect it via HDMI, but am curious can I buy a Sound Bar home receiver
that has an HDMI input and then use the Apple TV without a TV? Thanks, curious
if you just need any receiver with a HDMI input.
