Too bad that VoiceOver is so lame in the terminal. I have found it most useful to ssh into my Mac from within a running Linux VM in order to get the superior terminal performance available with Speakup. Pretty cludgy, I know. But, it does the trick. At home, I simply keep an ssh session from my Linux desktop logged into the Mac for the same reason.
