Oh yes, forgot to say: I do pity the bandwidth-conscious. This change sucks for them. But if you are updating multiple devices on the same network, then the Caching Service built into OS X Server can really help with that. Sadly this service refuses to function over Wi-Fi, so the fairly common scenario of a tethered iPhone, or an iPhone running through a mobile access point shared with a Mac, will not work. :(
