Hello Mark,

Let me add my voice to those who would really appreciate some good guidance and
direction, in order to speed up and make more efficient our review and
management of email. As someone who gets hundreds of messages each day, I
surely would benefit from any effort, be it a podcast, or written resource of
any kind. I am a relatively new user of the Mac, and while I learn more each
day, I'm still not as nimble with email management as I was with Windows. I'm
confident though that I'll get there. The beauty of giving people choice is
that we can design a system that will work for each of us, since needs,
interests and practice will vary widely. Being able to choose which column I
hear first, and whether a piece of the email is read, in addition to other
customizable features, ought to be completely driven by individual users.

Thanks to anyone who might take this on.

Best,

Paul

Hello Jonathon and thank you for your kind compliment in describing my previous
post as being clear.

Actually, I do not use a 5 line preview pane, although I do use the standard
view.

The primary beauty of the technique I use is that, if setup properly, one does
not have to jump into each individual message of a thread in order to have it
be automatically read by VoiceOver.

Jonathan, since you are the tech writer of the group, perhaps we could discuss
the configuration and execution, off-list, and you could write up a short guide.
Just a thought (smile).

Hmmm, based on mark's clear description already, O'm not sure what everyone is
expecting him to add? He's using the standard layout, not classic, with five
lines of preview, and VO+J to jump into the full body of the message where
necessary. I think that's what a number of us are doing. Works well.
The only other thing I'd add is that interacting with the message table in a
folder where messages are grouped by conversation, such as the folder one might
set up for this list, helps because you can arrow down and hear only the
subjects of the threads, rather than having to sit through a long list of
senders before you know what the subject is.

I know it takes time to write up guides, but I would be interested in your

a podcast or a conference call, which all might not attend. I like written
guides, because I can access them and start and stop or review or whatever
without having to fool with the whole podcast thing. I guess it goes back to my
braille learning and using days in school. I love audio, , Nothing beats a
step-by-step list of do this, than that, then the other thing.

Hi Jonathan, this is quite exciting to me. So does that mean you could write a
script that puts the subject column first, and that upon running that script,
the change would stick?
If so, I would be super interested in such a script. It would be even better if
the settings were folder specific, but I'm guessing that's not possible?

For what it's worth, I also use the five-line preview. Often, this is enough to
let me read the entire message, or at least most of it. If I need to open it, I
press enter, and VO reads it automatically. I can press vo-a to speed up the
reading process, but that's not usually necessary. When done, cmd-w closes the
message and I'm back in the list.

I always keep the preview pane closed, because with it opened, arrowing past a
message is enough to mark it 'read' even if I didn't read it. I also use the
modern layout, because the classic one doesn't support the preview text I
mentioned before. yes, classic layout lets me sort the order of columns in the
messages table, but losing that preview isn't worth saving a second by hearing
the subject first, to me at least.

This is a highly personal choice, and is based on what you are used to, how you
read messages, and so on. Play with both layouts and see which you like best. I
really can't offer anything more specific than that, because the 'best' way is
subjective.

Hello,

I too am a fan of the Apple mail. I do not use classic view., I have 5 lines
showing. I just curser down and 5 lines is enough to judge whether I want to
open it. Most messages I don’t bother. I just hit the delete key. This is using
the wired keyboard. I only expand the thread I want to read. I haven’t found
how to have 5 lines displayed for individual messages in a thread. I hit return
to open message if I want to read more than the 5 lines. Or in a threaded
message. I also use a smart mailbox with all my unread messages. Other rules
for my PayPal receipts for example, are automatically moved into their
respective mailboxes. I do need to open such messages to gain the read flag.

Hello Traci,

I am a huge fan of the Mac Mail application. In fact, I think it the absolute
best resource that the Mac has to offer. With it, I can go through hundreds
and hundreds of messages in just a few minutes with a minimum of keystrokes as
VoiceOver automatically reads each message as it comes into focus.

Having said this, there are a few things one must do in which to get this to
happen.

IN this post, I will only sketch out the broad strokes as a more detailed
description would take more time to list than I have, at the moment.

1.
You must use the Default layout view, complete with the preview pane intact.
More simply put, do not modify the default view.

2.
You must use the conversation view with all conversations, collapsed.

3.
Your primary navigation key will be the Tab Key along with the arrow keys.
Generally speaking, there is no need to use the enter key, the command+o key
combo nor the command+w key-combo.

If you would like more details on how to use the application as I do, please
send me a message, off-list and we can schedule a time for a live walk-through,
via phone.

Subject: Most efficient way to read emails

Hi all,

I’d like to here how people read their emails in Mac Mail. Personally, I’m
finding it rather cumbersome & time consuming. Here is what I typically do…
Hopefully, y’all have a better way.

I use classic layout. Quick-nav is off & I hit right arrow to open the message
thread. I navigate to the earliest message in the discussion & hit command-o
to open. Once I’ve read that message, command-w to close, then delete. I then
arrow up to the next message in the thread. I do this until I’m done reading
the discussion.

I’ve had inconsistent success with opening a thread by command-o, then using
vo-j to jump message to message, but this doesn’t work all the time.

Please, any tips? Does anyone use the other layout in mail? Is it faster?
The one little time saver I miss, is deleting a message right from the message
window. It seems I need to close it first to successfully delete it.

Thank you, I appreciate the help.
Traci
