So unlike the others, I wouldn’t bother with antivirus software with the following caveats. That you use only approved sources for software, you use good common sense computing and you have a decent router firewall and aren’t plugging straight in to the network.
Expanding on this, the number of virus / worms and things for the Mac is still relatively low. It’s growing for certain but the Mac has something that windows never had and that’s a good operating system and a good secure kernel to build on. Unix is just inherently more secure than Windows will ever be. As such you can really lock down your machine more and things like user and group permissions are actually usable and meaningful instead of window dressing.:) So, I’m confident in saying if you use good common sense computing practices you’ll be fine. If you travel and are on public WiFi a lot or you need to install from non approved 3rd parties then by all means install something. If you feel you must, I’ve had good luck with ESET and of the ones mentioned, the Sophos engine is better than the Kaspersky engine. The implementation I’ve used is on the Juniper SRX firewalls and I’ve found the Sophos engine to be much more efficient and less false positives. That being said nothing, no program or package beats good quality common sense safe computing.
