I believe this is a setting in Google configurations. Are you sure your new 
phone is still using POP? The IMAP protocol has been in more favour recently 
since it will keep everything in sync. 

Perhaps if you delete your gmail account, disable IMAP service from the Gmail 
settings and then re-add your account to the phone everything will work as you 
want.
