I’m surprised about your feelings about the watch but then again that’s exactly
what I thought before I used / owned one. I’m not sure what I would do with it
if it ran separate from the phone. The fact it joins my WiFi and has such good
bluetooth range means I can leave my phone any where in my multistory home and
have access to it’s screen pops and all my data from my wrist. It’s great for
checking that quick text or latest news headline, quick phone call and yes the
Dick Tracy reference isn’t lost on me either definitely cool. But what would I
gain by having a separate data line on my watch? Not that much when my phone
is always in range. This is a feeling I have gotten though only after owning
the device. Before I couldn’t understand why it needed the phone and was
designed that way either.

You for example don’t need the phone to place calls though if your carrier
supports WiFi calling. My phone can be completely powered down and I can place
and take calls.
