Scott, from what I've heard being a single man, I'd like to sample taylor swift!

But yes, music doesn't sound the same in it's extremely pure form now.

Black sabith live tonight here in Dunedin, one of the heaviest bands out and
their playing in my town,
I'm getting all excited.

So that’s the deal Simon, I think you’ve nailed it.

We’ve sold our musical souls for the hell that is convenience.:) (ok maybe a
bit hyperbolic)

But you are on to something. Sure, it’s great to carry around a million songs
in my device or have the entire catalog of the output of the human race
available over the network via stream but if they all sound like you know what
on a shingle then what’s the point? :)

Again, I think it’s sort of in the same category as the headphone jack. People
just don’t care. They don’t listen close enough to care. Of course some do
but I’m speaking in generalities here. The mass market doesn’t care if their
Taylor Swift is sampled at 44.1, 48 or 96 KHZ and lossless compressed or lossy
squeezed until the life is left lying on the floor.

Popular music was weaponized in the 60S and 70S. The CIA and UK intelligence
agencies formed an institute that studied the effects of media, especially
music and how to generate mass market products that influence the populations
and “dumb them down”. Part of that effort is the total artificialization of
the content. I personally played a part unfortunately in this progression with
some of my work early on in my career in teaching computers to reconstruct
human voices to make them more appealing to the ear. People just don’t hear a
difference from Taylor Swift’s 4 chord mind numbing progression to One
Direction’s 4 chord mind numbing progression. It’s all generated by the same
software. The very few of us who still like to listen to Miles Davis or Andre
Watts or Willy Nelson or fill in your real musician here don’t matter.
It was a real eye or is it ear opener for me the other day when I tried
to listen to a pianist execute a real performance instead of Nicole Scherzinger
undressing on my iPhone while the computer sings for her and it shocked the
hell out of me.

I remember something my professor told me in college when he and I were having
an argument over digital audio verses analog and being a young whippersnapper I
was on the digital side. He said “digital music is to formaldehyde as to what
analog music is to a frog. A frog perfectly preserved in formaldehyde will
last for ever and always look like a frog but it’s not alive and as such it’s
no longer a real frog.” He was right. I don’t want my frogs to be close
digital approximations.:)
