Here are three other tips which I use in open/save dialog boxes: 1. If you know what the default button is in a dialog box, such as “open” or “save”, you can also just press ENTER to activate it. You do not need to be on the button in question; in fact you can be on a totally different button or control. 2. As well as the popup menu, you can use any of a series of keystrokes to jump around in the file system. For example, to jump to your home folder, use COMMAND+SHIFT+H. To jump to your documents folder, press COMMAND+SHIFT+O. A list of these keystrokes can be seen in the Finder under the Go menu in the menu bar. Anyway, these keys can also be pressed no matter where you are in the dialog box. Since ENTER will activate a default button, such as the save button when saving a document, you can use these hotkeys to great effect. For instance, to save a file to your documents folder, just enter the name you’d like your document to have, press COMMAND+SHIFT+O to select the documents folder, then press ENTER. 3. If you need to pick a specific file or folder but the list view containing files and folders isn’t showing up, use VO+LEFT and VO+RIGHT ARROWS to move through the dialog until you hear “disclosure”. If it says “collapsed”, hit VO+SPACE to expand it. This controls whether the list is shown or not. And again, use the hotkeys like COMMAND+SHIFT+O to pick the folder where you want to start from, then you can drill down further using the list view control to pick, let’s say, a subfolder of the documents folder.
