Hi Sarai,

I do a short version of this regularly, often when I come back home after going
to the Lawn bowls club, my wife may ask me to get something from the store. I
would call for the cab with the store as my destination. On rout to the shop, I
would ask the driver not to end the trip when we arrive, then just before I get
out, I change the end destination to my home.

There are a few ways to look at the question, "is this expensive?" Objectively,
I would say no. Using an Uber cab to do several things in one trip is obviously
cheeper than doing 3 or 4 different trips from point to point. For those who do
not know, Uber charges a flat minimum rate per trip, and those can pile up.
Using My very specific situation, the flat rate for Uber in South Africa is
R20. Usually a trip from the Bowls Club to my preferred store is about R33. The
trip from home to the same store is the minimum R20.

Thus, if I were to call 1 Uber, and another one to get home, it should cost me
about R53. When using only 1 Uber for both destinations in one trip, it usually
works out to between R45 and R48. Saving anywhere between R5 and R8.

Subjectively Uber is expensive, of course! Though once again objectivity comes
to the rescue. I calculated the difference between actually owning a Car and
using Uber a few months back, once again for South Africa, for this is where I
live.

The difference is unbelievable! In my personal situation, using on average R400
on Uber trips a month, and where owning a small Car and using it fore the same
trips comes to R8000 a month. This puts my uber cost at about 5% of the cost of
a car. So objectively, once again, Uber is, not, expensive.

Warm regards,

Brandt Steenkamp
