I am far from being a power user of VMware. Here is what I do. I do not have an SSD so boot times are agonizing. After you hear the Windows sound, wait a while longer to allow your Windows to completely boot up.

Then do a Cmd G to grab the keyboard control away from the Mac. You still can access the Mac menu bar but try not to forget which environment you are in. Sometimes I press a Mac shortcut in error and then have to find my way back to Windows.

   Next, do Cmd Shift F to enter full screen mode. Do not use Unity.

You do not need to eject or reconnect an external drive. G o to the menu bar, find the Virtual Machine menu which is between the View and Window menus. Arrow down to the USB and Bluetooth option, right arrow and find your drive and VO space on it. You will hear a sound when its connected.
