I have not actually owned a mac for a few months now, but this always
worked for me. I stopped upgrading at Yosemity and possibly that makes a
difference. I always used column mode browsing, and maybe it selects
folders in a specific way that vlc needs. You can also try command shift
O. This brings up a more complex media locater dialog with a files and
folders tab that might allow you to play folders if the standard one doesn't.
