Hi,

That is correct.  The Finder cannot be closed, nor does it need to be.  Things 
like Spotlight are usually services, not apps, thus when you close it, the 
Finder is still considered the running application, but focus is not within the 
correct window.  The cmd-tab I mentioned will bring focus back to the correct 
Finder window and you should be fine to proceed.
