Hello Donna, Does sound a bit convoluted. You can always create a keyboard commander to do this either option o, option p or option 8 would make sense to me.
So, bring up VO Utility (vo-H (twice) and then type util ) Move to commanders command-8 Select the keyboard tab Press the Add button. type the shortcut you want to use Hit tab and find in the "General Menu" Open VoiceOver Utility. Close Voice Over Utility Test things out.
