I gave your configuration a try to see if it made things any better.  It does, 
but there’s still a tendency to clip off the first bit of sound after a pause 
in navigation.  My wife likes the system so I may make due with it.  Running 
everything through the TV at least seems to have cured the unit’s failure to 
recognize and switch to the cable box when things are powered on.  The optical 
connection seems to work properly.  Still I would not recommend a speech 
dependent user buy the JBL Bar 3.1.  Great bass though.  More than you want if 
you turn it up high.
