I personally do not use any protection software beyond what is built into the
OS. However, I rarely install free software that does not come from the Apple
store or that I can't compile myself. I believe Google does a fairly good job
of blocking web sites that attempt to install software without the end user
knowledge. I am attaching a New York Times article below about malware
protection. Probably a more Mac based article might be better trusted, but I
think this one is not being either too aggressive or too conservative.

Protecting Your Mac From Malware and Viruses
By J. D. BIERSDORFER <https://www.nytimes.com/by/j-d-biersdorfer>AUG. 28, 2015

A. Recent versions of Mac OS X include built-in malware protection
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201940> like file quarantine and plug-in
blocking, and the system has incorporated a number of other safety features
<https://www.apple.com/osx/what-is/security/>. Still, these defenses may not be
enough to keep the Mac clear of evolving threats. While Windows users have
traditionally been the primary target of malicious software, times have
changed. Mac users should not assume their machines are impervious to spyware,
viruses and other intrusive code — hacked web pages and malware programs
written to specifically attack OS X are out there.

If you are seeing a lot of intrusive ads and fraudulent system alert messages
<http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-support-scam-pop-ups/>when you browse the web,
your Mac may have picked up a piece of unwanted software in your travels. Apple
<http://www.nytimes.com/topic/company/apple-incorporated?inline=nyt-org>’s site
has a guide to dealing with pop-ups and adware
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987> that hamper its Safari browser.

Third-party security programs
<http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2406379,00.asp> can also help protect
your system, and the Mac App Store has a number of antivirus apps for OS X. If
your main concern is adware and malware, free tools like Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware for Mac <https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/> and
Bitdefender Virus Scanner for Mac
<http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/virus-scanner-for-mac.html> can catch a
number of invasive programs. Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn
