Bill, You showed up as Bill in this thread. I believe however that Mail takes the Full name from contacts application and uses that for what is displayed by default in its mail application.
take a look at menu view->Messages->"view all headers and see how that presents your name. " You may also want to turn off the preference Use Smart Addresses checkbox located in the viewing tab of mail preferences.
