I know someone here in NZ who has had a similar situation on a reasonably new 
mac book,

 So it's not a device age issue it's to me a driver issue, surely then that 
would be a bootcamp driver which is of course an apple thing not windows.

Yeah, Simon. It's easy to do.

Problem is that last time I had sighted assistance here, we finished the 
Windows installation with sighted help. We installed NVDA without speech. We 
confirmed that volume was not muted and was at around 50%.

Lastly, there's a "test" button on the Windows configuration screen that 
graphically shows some kind of progress indicator while sound is playing, so my 
sighted assistant could verify that Windows was playing sound.


I'm confident it's a driver issue, or a driver plus Windows security kind of 
combination issue.

There are those in the security community that consider audio a security risk. 
I've bumped heads with them before. I've still got the bruises!
