There might be one other thing in play here. Some websites grab the arrow keys for their own purposes. This will disable the shift-arrow functionality. You can override this in VoiceOver Utility:Web
Check the Always allow keyboard commands to navigate websites This will enable the arrow key selection to work again. Checking this box does break Google web apps, and some other more dynamic sites, that have been coded to control focus when the arrow keys are pressed. It will probably break some menus on web sites too. The other possibility is to try the "reader" in safari. Look in the view menu to turn it on. It might be that Reader mode will provide you a clean view of the Lyrics you are trying to obtain.
