Hi Kristeen,

Are you running High Sierra? If so, by default, the new disk utility hides some 
of the information that you may need to work with this drive. Go to the view 
menu in disk utility and select the option that says “show all devices.” You 
then may be able to see the actual top level of the drive which allows you to 
do things like format, erase and partition.
