I have to tell you a story about the first step you mentioned.
So there i was with my shiny new airpods, proud as ever. I took them out of the 
case and put them in my ears and nothing happened. I got grumpily disappointed 
since it was quite late yesterday evening and i said to myself that this was 
money wasted because the frigging things don’t work and i put back the airpods 
in their case, or i was just about to when suddenly the phone came to life and 
shouted that there was a couple airpods nearby and would i want to pair them so 
i answered yes and off i went. 
I’m surpriced at just how good they sound. I think they will be my favourite 
ear phones.
