Thanks I was only aware of the facetime to facetime skype type calling as I've 
never tried using it in other ways.

 Might have to try that one

FaceTime on Mac, iPad, and other non-phone devices uses your iPhone as the 
actual phone. In other words, the device turns into a fancy bluetooth 
speakerphone. There is another way, called wifi calling, where a non-iPhone 
Apple device can use wifi to make a cellular call directly, not touching the 
iPhone at all. This, though, is a carrier-specific feature that may not be 
available in all areas. In either case, FaceTime is the app you'd use to do any 
of this.
