While I don't have an answer to your question, I note that Microsoft Outlook
for Mac (which I need to use to access one of my accounts) does this by
default. That is, if you expand a thread using the Right-Arrow key, focus is
placed on the oldest unread message in the thread, from which you can move up
to read the remaining (more recent) messages.

i often prefer reading a thread without expanding it so I can simply delete
the currently read message and automatically open the next item. The problem
is that the next item is the message sent just prior to the currently read
message. I wish there was a way to read a thread from oldest (presumably
original) message to most recent message.
