Hello Cameron, my guess is a corrupted download.  I just installed the
latest Openoffice download on my Macbook pro with Snow leopard and
everything went as expected.  
Note that you will hear the word "text before each new paragraph in a Writer
document.  This seems to be a bug in Voiceover that I don't know how to get
around.
