Hi,

Formatting it to MacOS Extended (Journealed) is the best if you're only going 
to be using it with a Mac.  Sometimes, there are just hardware problems in the 
mass manufacturing of things.  I don't think that you did anything wrong, it's 
just an unlucky fluke.
