Yeah I got half a dozen USB-C to USB A adapters from ali express for 2 USA
dollars,

Infact shipping was twice that.

I’ve also got 2 USB-C Hubs one which has 2 USB-3 ports,
1 HDMI,
1 SD card slot and another USB-C pass through for power and Ethernet
And it’s small enough to fit in my pocket
I’ve got another one which has a couple more USB-3 ports and VGA and they are
really handy to have around.

I could suggest one of those if you needed to extend ports.

Correct. That's why you need adapters to go from USB type A, which most drives
and other connectors still are for now, to the new USB type C. Thunderbolt is
just a speed standard defining the speed of data transfer over the port, it's
not a physical aspect of the port's shape.

Sorry, I may have read wrong. I believe you said you are using (or getting) a
new Mac with only USBC? If that's the case you'll need to have a way for the
USB-A (the older ports you probably think of when you think USB) to talk to the
new USB-C ports. That's the adapter I'm talking about. The number, like USB2 or
USB3, is more about the speed than any physical changes.

Anything will work, as USB3 is backward-comptabile with the USB2 on your old
Mac. I'd definitely get a USB3 storage device, even though it's more expensive,
because it will be a lot faster.

As to the question of connection types, that's what adapters are for. Grab a
USBC adapter or three, or a hub, to connect your drive. If the drive is USBC,
then you'll need the opposite adapter to connect the drive to the old Mac.
Either way, make sure the adapter is able to handle USB3 speeds, as cheap
adapters that can't will bottleneck your transfers.

Hi all:
My April 2010 MBP over-halled with an SSD is getting long in the tooth with
Voiceover, as well as cannot be updated anymore.
So, all of my Windows machines, and my Mac have the regular 2.0 USB port.
The MBP or MBA have these new thunderbolt ports. If I want to by an external
HD, or a thumb drive to transfer items between the old mac, the new mac, and
Windows machine, what kind of HD and thumb drive am I looking for?

Leaning towards getting the new MBA, but it depends on what good deals crop up
around Thanksgiving.
