Yeah not sure who he is but he’s very slow.

Still better than a kick in the a.

Simon,

Yeah, it uses a basic speech at a very low level of the startup process. It's
not really VO, just a set of phrases that are spoken. I believe it uses the
good old Fred voice.

Hi Tim,

Yes it does appear to be a hardware thing now.

I do notice that on my 2018 mac book pro the vo voice is slower and almost
straining when it says simply Username and Password.

Then a few seconds pass and it works as expected

Hi Simon,

Your various test-cases match my finings as well. Older hardware produces the
beep scenario when FV is enabled. Newer hardware does speak "username" and
"Password" at the FV login, but behaves with normal VO behaviours after the FV
encryption has been accepted.

Yeah
Well I’m having to question this now also.

My newish mac book pro with high sierra and file volt speaks fine with FV
enabled.

I get the username prompt and then the password prompt as you are getting,
When I close the lid of the machine and reopen it to the log in,
Vo is already speaking and I only have to enter my password, all prompted with
VO,
I had to check that file volt was enabled and fully setup.

That mac book pro is the non touch bar model and only 5 months give or take old.

However I have a mid 2012 Mac Book Pro running 10.13.6 which will not let vo
speak what ever I do at the log in,
But it does have the single beep for username, password gives 3 if correct.

Even if I tick the box to say start vo at log in,
It still doesn’t talk.

My mac book air mid 2013 also speaks at the log in screan and it’s running
10.14 as I’ve not updated it yet.

So I’m thinking it’s also relating to hardware and OS version

Either way the important thing is to be able to get in to the machine whether
it talks or not.

For my MacBook Air that I purchased two years ago the single beep is replaced
with a voice saying user name and the two beeps are replaced with the same
voice saying password. It still has the three beeps, though sometimes those
don't sound.

So, I expect that some of the behavior is based on the firmwaare.

                                Best wishes,

Morning All,

I've just enabled file volt on my Mac Book Pro 2018 running Mojave 10.14.1 and
noted the following message down during the FV enabling

Hopefully it will answer a number of questions people have been having.

Important Message, Noted down.

Important VoiceOver Information:

When you log in to unlock an Encrypted Disk, VoiceOver is not available!

Instead Beeps indicate the LogIn Field in which the Kersor is located.

After your computer restarts follow these instructions to LogIn,

press CommandF5,
A Single beep indicates the LogIn Window is ready for input and the Kersor is
positioned in the "Name" Field!
Type your "Username" and hit return,

If you hear a Single Beep the "Username" is Invalid,

Type the "Name" again
If you hear a Double Beep then the Name is Valid and your Kersor is positioned
in the "Password" Field,

Type your "Password" and hit Return,

If you hear a Double Beep your password is Invalid,

Type your Password again and if you hear 3 Beeps,

Then your Password is Valid and LogIn Preceeds...
