Hi all. I find that when using FaceTime, nobody can hear my computer and I can't hear their's. Because of this, I recommend you use Skype if you need to hear the other computer. This is if both parties are using Facetime on Macs. However, if both of you use Facetime on your iPhones, you won't have this issue.
