Yes, you can do some adjusting of what shows up as a dialog versus just showing up in Notification center. I was looking at the options for All day event notifications in my Calendar app (preferences / alerts) and only saw options for none, 1 day before at 9AM or two days before at 9 AM. (Well there were other day counts but no place to adjust the time of the alert).
