After going brain dead last night I came to that conclusion too. I found something in a Google search that indicates that one can only import text files into Writer. So today I will go back to the TextEditor app I already had and see what happens.

Hi ET,
So I have no problem saving a document as RTF, but you are correct, you can't
open anything but plain text in Writer. Too bad, that seriously limits its
functionality. Not sure what the developer was thinking here. I mean, who works
with txt documents anymore!
Cheers,
Donna

Donna,
Perhaps if I could impose upon you, it might help me if you can tell me how
you do it.

Using Voice Dream Writer, what steps do you take to create or edit an rtf
document? Do do all of it from the Voice Dream Writer on iCloud Drive?

When I edit the document, I do not see a save option. Under the Export
button I used the export to external destination option.

   Thanks much Donna.

I was testing different things and was not looking in the app specific
folder. But now a question. If say, on Windows, I edit an rtf file then try to
view it on the iPhone, I get an error message saying it failed to import, file
must be in plain text. This happened in both Voice Dream Writer and Pages.
Have you seen this too?

Donna,
I was just working with Voice Dream Writer and Text Editor and find the
former easier to use. Both apps are set up in iCloud Drive. If I open a

I am disappointed that Comic Sans MS is not in the list of fonts. Could be
worse, right?

Hi ET,
When you open text editor, it defaults to showing a list of recently opened
files. But at the bottom of the screen, there are two buttons, recents, which
is selected, and Browse. If you tap browse, you can browse and open files in
iCloud drive.
In Voice Dream Writer, the easiest way is by opening the File Manager. All your
recently opened files will show up there. (Note that you will want to enable
iCloud syncing.) Alternatively, you can select Add Document, which is at the
top left of the screen, right next to the File Manager button.. Then select
Import from External Location. Then you'll have a choice between Recents, and
Browse. If you Select Browse, and iCloud is enabled, that will be one of your
options.

Hi Donna,
We had discussed this regarding rtf editors and iCloud Drive. I am finally
getting around to working on this.

On the iPad I can find any file using the Files app. But how then would I
edit a file using say, TextEditor or Voice Dream Writer? On the other hand, if
I open either app, I cannot find the file in its folder on iCloud Drive.

I've been placing certain documents on iCloud Drive for easy access from any
device such as a list of shortcuts for Mac or iOS. Reading them is fine. But if
I need to do any editing, that is where I am lost. If I can figure out iCloud
Drive, I am home free. Thanks.
