Hi, Andrew:

Wednesdays are my very busy day and I frequently don't get to list
traffic on Wednesdays.

Also, this particular question is arguably well off topic for this list,
as the distinctions between the Debian ISO that installed Mate for you
and the tarch iso that would give you a pure console environment with a
function Speakup are the kind of details that have nothing to do with
Apple stuff. There's really no similarity to what one does in the os x
terminal.

Nevertheless, let me ask you to send me, from your terminal on
Debian--now that you know how to redirect output into a file, the output
from the following command:

aplay -l
And to answer the should you question, all I can say is to tell you the
difference.

You used an installation image that focussed on the graphical desktop.
It delivered that for you, but did nothing about providing you the
accessible console environment.

The tarch iso will do the exact opposite. It'll give you a bare bones
talking console environment. All that Mate goodness will then be up to
you.

So, it's up to you, really, what you want at this stage. For myself,
speaking personally, looking around the Mate desktop is interesting, but
not all that different from what one gets with os x on a Mac, or from
Microsoft Windows.

And, yes, the command line you get in the graphical environment is
technically a terminal. The consoles exist for you on that machine, but
they won't talk. You get to them using Ctrl+Alt+F2 probably through
Ctrl+Alt+F6. None of those will talk, but they are sitting at a console
login screen. if you try it, you get back to the graphical goodness with
Ctrl+Alt+F1.

Can you get a talking console environment from what you have? Yes, but
I'd suggest doing so by enabling ssh access to that machine. The
graphical environment is likely to complain about asked to function
sudo, as rightly it should.

Best,

Janina
