Instead of editing the hosts file with individual items,the easeyer way is to replace the existing hosts file. These replacement hosts files can be foun on the net in which new objectional ip addresses are added as discovered. I first found this method to avoid the irking youtube ads. It has been years now since I have encounterered an ad anywhere.
Here is one source which is constantly updated: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt Download that text hosts.txt file renaming it simply hosts. In the root folder etc rename the existing hosts file; in case you want to go back to it later. Place the new host file in the etc folder.
