Hi Tim, I’ve just this passed Monday received a new keyboard for my iPad mini 5 The keyboard is a Brydge 7.9 Bluetooth device and so far seems to be working fine, I’ll have to try these things and see if it’s effected.

My Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro behaves similar to your explanation. I will play some more to see if I can figure any workarounds out. For now, I've just ignored it and used my other devices. Hmmm, I'll have to confirm, but I believe that this is also happening with my Apple Magic Keyboard and my iPhone. Again, I'll see what I can confirm.
