Onn a fullsize keyboard there is a mute key that toggles all sound on and off. It is f10 on mykeyboard, or the third key to the left of the eject key on the top row. The eject key is the one at the top far right corner of the main keyboard.
Note, system preferences can set the fuction keys to act like f keys or an alternative set of functions, my setting is the lattter. If the function key alternative is set, holding the fn key while selecting the mute key will also work.
