Hi Ian, About 3 years back, when Apple stores were open to go into, I traded in 2 Iphones and an Ipad. The only thing I was able to do in the store was let them wipe all the data and personal information off of my devices. The trade-ins had to be done by mailing them in. And if I am recalling correctly, there was also an on-line form that had to be completed before they sent the mailing cartons and related paperwork that had to get packaged with each specific device.
Depending on the condition of the device(s) they will then mail you some dollar amount back in the form of Apple gift cards. In my case I wanted to upgrade my phone, but because the phones I was trading in had to get wiped clean and shipped to them, I could not apply the gift cards towards my new purchase since I did not want to be without my cell-phone service during the interim. I wound up putting the gift cards towards Apple TV’s. So they keep you coming back to them no matter what. One thing I can’t find out is how it works while we can’t go to the stores. Could it all be done remotely? If I buy the new items, how long do I get to return the trade in items and do they send all the necessary packaging? How do they ensure the condition is right for the value they offer? I have tried to find this out but frustrated in my wanderings around the store terms and conditions.
