Janina,
I think I have that same Apple hub, with three USB-A, one HDM, one SD, one 
RJ-xx, and yes one USB-C slot. There’s another slot that might be for a smaller 
memory card, but not sure. I’ve also encountered times where I need to move my 
USB-A device from one port to another to get it to “wake up” in Finder on my 
Mac, so you’re not alone in wondering about it.
USB resources are assigned in real time as they are needed, and if the Mac 
works anything like the Windows system did, the resources continue to stack up 
without being recycled, and possibly run out of available  addresses. Hopefully 
these clear out upon system resets or re-boots, or power on/off cycles.
