Hi Lorie, Congratulations on successfully installing macOS Catalina.
I have not found a use for the filter at the top of the message list. It seems to report how mail is sorted, but serves no other purpose that I can tell To change sort order of items in the message list, go to: MenuBar > View > Sort By, where you can select Date. In this menu, you can also select if you want the newest or oldest message on top. Also, there is no longer Classic View in Catalina’s Mail app. If this is your preference, you will want to go to the View menu as above, and enable Column View, which is pretty much the same as the old Classic View.
