Sorry to hear about your fall.  The watch is a very nice Chanukah present.

The time feature you mentioned is taptic time.  In other words, instead of 
VoiceOver speaking the time, just do a one-finger  double tap on the face.  try 
to do it closer to the top of the screen. Here’s how to set it up.
On your watch or iPhone, go to Clock. Flick right to Taptic Time and activate 
the toggle button, if it is not already on. On the new screen choose how you 
want apple Watch to tell time. There are three options. I use the  Digits 
option.  VoiceOver will explain each option.

Your watch will mirror your iPhone regarding notifications. Make sure 
Notifications is activated on your watch.  You can do this from the Watch app 
on your iPhone or   or directly  on  your watch.
