Tracy, I did just that several years back. I bought a Motorola surfboard modem
to replace the Comcast modem that I was renting. All that was required was to
register the modem with Comcast by giving them the 16 or so digit number off
the bottom of the modem. It’s not the serial number, but some other type like
the I am E I number or something. Anyway once the modem was registered and I
had signal I simply plugged in my Apple time machine router and I was often
running no complications at all again once the modem was receiving signal it
was a simple matter of plugging in any router to have Wi-Fi in the house. Not
so complicated.
