If you hold down the VO + CMD keys, then use the right/left arrow keys to set the rotor to “Words”, then while continuing to hold the VO + CMD keys, you can use the up/down arrow keys to navigate/read by single word.
In some situations, it may also be possible to navigate/read by single word, by holding down the Option key, and using the right/left arrows.
