May i ask where the file came from?
One possible test, as Jonathan suggests might be this.
save the file with a .zip extension, put it in a folder, and unzip the
contents. perhaps? you may find .xml or .html files there, which can be
read using a number of tools.
There might be a flaw in his theory however.
while indeed many epub files are technically epub.zip, when I get those, I
save them as .epub, and send them to robobraille for converting, some epub
files are created for specific e-readers. Nook for example.
i am unsure if those files work the same way..I have an idea for a test
though.

Except for those cases where the pub is protected, you should be able to rename
the file by replace pub with zip and then uncompressing it. Unlike web pages,
instead of a index.html there will probably be a SMIL file that will be used to
define the order and also to synchronize audio and text files.
