I believe this has to do with the “Slide to Type” feature, and my guess is that
when enabled, a slide to type character is previewed before it is actually
typed into the edit field area.
This would not be the same as “Show Lowercase Keys”, which changes the
key-labels on the keyboard to correspond with the Shift/CapsLock status.
